Safflower Oil And Weight Loss

By Kerri Turner

In 2009, the Ohio State University has conducted a study on the impact of taking conjugated linoleic acid, or CLA. They wanted to explore the effects it can have on losing excess body mass and lowering the glucose level. As a control substance they introduced Safflower oil, also known as SAF. Safflower oil and weight loss became the main topics of numerous debates after they have published the results.

The whole experiment involved fifty five overweight, postmenopausal women with diagnosed type2 diabetes. The experiment took 36 weeks, in three phases. The first one involved taking a small amount of CLA or SAF daily, without any special diet or physical activity, for 16 weeks. The second one was cleaning, or washing their organism. In the third phase they had to take the oil daily for 16 weeks, just like in the first one.

Only 35 women finished this study, and those taking CLA lost weight. But the surprising results of taking SAF were more significant. Those women didn't lose body weight, but they lost body fat, more precisely, the fat around their waistlines. Together with the fact their glucose level became lower as well, it was enough to make this oil extremely popular.

They actually lost averagely 6,3 percent of the fat around their waistlines, and that was a great news, even if 20 women didn't finished this experiment. This small study was actually about CLA, but no one cares about it. The fact that SAF was only a placebo isn't important.

There are many stories about SAF and the process of losing weight, but it has to be said those women taking SAF didn't lose any. Results are really interesting, anyway. Some additional studies are needed for reaching more concrete conclusions.

To be more precise, CLA reduced body mass index and total adipose mass, but it didn't have any effect on lean mass. On the other hand, SAF had no influence on reducing body mass or body mass index, but it reduced trunk adipose mass and increased lean mass. Both substances lowered the glucose level in some percentage.

Lowered fasting glucose level and increased level of adiponectin was more important. Adiponectin is a protein that can be found in human body and it is connected with regulation of glucose levels, but also with fatty acids breakdown. They did make some conclusions, but nothing concrete. Both oils can have some significance in glycemic control and body mass control.

Humans do need good fats to be healthy. Omega 3 is highly appreciated. Omega 6, on the other hand, is also important, but nutritionists say people use enough already, maybe even too much. Those oils contain Omega 6, but many other foods contain it also. It's hard to say why should this be important.

The benefits of vitamin E are also well known, but it can also be found in many different sources. The problem is that this study group was so narrow. Only obese, postmenopausal women with diabetes participated in it. They didn't have any additional rules or any special control. The results were taken only once a month. It is still impossible to say something more conclusive about safflower oil and weight loss.
